Dear HLT Readers,

Welcome to the August issue of HLT. To start with I have a lot of exiting news for you …

As you will have noticed, you can enjoy the new modern design and layout of HLT. There may still be some teething problems but bear with us as we will get there eventually. Your feedback and suggestions will be more than welcome. We will do our best to take them on board. But I have to say HLT now looks fresh and is more user friendly.

We are enjoying a very inspiring Pilgrims teacher training summer in Canterbury. We hope you can join us next year. There are many ways to come to Pilgrims… private funds, school funding, teacher association’s; perhaps you will be successful applying for your Erasmus+ grant, or possibly you will be the winner of the Bonnie Tsai Scholarship for 2019. The scholarship competition will be run again and this time the theme is 21st Century Skills. Anybody can apply … . For more information on the scholarship and other exciting Pilgrims news, events and developments, go to Pilgrims News.

As for the articles in this issue there is something for  primary teachers:  Phonics for Free: Using Recycled Materials in Resource-impoverished Schools by Sunee Steyn, Stephen Louw and Thoeun Malin, for secondary teachers: Cohesion and Coherence: Teaching Writing in English to Chinese High School Learners by Lingzhu Ji and Jianyu Qiao, and Reading Comprehension Strategies: The Neglected Tools (…) by  Viviana N. Miglino, and for those who teach adults: The Official Letter as a Junction of Three Genres by Bat-Zion  Yemini,  The ESP Manual: Principles of Designing Study Materials by Boryana T. Ruzhekova-Rogozherova, and Changes in Self-Efficacy Beliefs of International Student-Writers on the EAP Foundation Programme by Diana Mazgutova.

You can also read about regional ELT issues like English Language Education in Sri Lanka Link with the Learners’ Motivational Factors by Nilushika Prasangani Kariyawasam Sittarage, and Black Education in English Language Teaching by Robin Usher.

Don’t miss the contributions on 21st Century Skills: Creativity with IT: Using Edpuzzle by Martin Cooke, and Students Use Webtools and Create Interactive Games Based on Museums by Eleni Tsagari.

You will find a lot of practical ideas and inspiration in the Lesson Ideas and Golden Classics sections, and some interesting opinions in the The Creativity Group and Voices sections.

As usual in Publications there is a lot of information about new ELT titles and ELT books worth looking at.

In the Humour section you can find: Turn it off and Read a Book. When I was preparing a talk on literacy and encouraging children to read. I researched cartoons on the subject. I found some that I found really thought provoking and I decided to share them with you.

Finally, look at the  Poems section Poems section where two seasoned TEFLers, Alan Maley and Mario Rinvolucri have decided to share their poems with us. This is unique and not to be missed.

Enjoy the August issue of HLT

Keep in touch, keep contributing to HLT, and share with colleagues articles you find interesting.
