Two Interactive Skype Lessons

Introduction

The role of creativity in the classroom is central to the learning process of students. In my view, a tutor needs to introduce materials in a new and fun way, which matches the students’ skills, abilities and interests to the maximum, wherever applicable. They should also place hurdles/challenges in order to boost students’ autonomy and confidence and present elements of exploration and discovery. The actual overcoming of difficult tasks benefits the students in the sense that they experience achievement, which stirs their inner motivation and creativity while attempting to act accordingly to the relevant linguistic situation. This is often fulfilled with the help of tasks for predicting the outcomes of certain linguistic scenarios, for example when part of the information is missing (see Lesson plan 2 below). Such are also activities which stimulate students’ inner knowledge, used as triggers at the start of a lesson (see Lesson 1, warm up), or explorative tasks for comparison or contrast of language structures, applied in specific contexts (Lesson plan 1, slide 7).

The lesson plans below are 1-2-1 Skype lessons with Intermediate/Upper-Intermediate (B1/B2) adult students, which we found mutually enjoyable.

Lesson plan 1 – an interactive grammar Skype lesson

Lesson plan 2 – a conversational Skype lesson with a video
